Great British Carrots

Seed to Store

The carrot crop is Britain’s major root vegetable, producing over 700,000 tonnes of carrots each year from 9,000 hectares. Each year 22 billion carrot seeds are sown in Britain, producing around 100 carrots per year for every member of the population.

Elsoms – The Seed Specialist

Based in Spalding, Lincolnshire, Elsoms is the UK’s leading supplier of quality vegetable seed, providing farmers and growers with outstanding products and service for over 100 years. You could say that we are the beginning of the growing chain, providing British carrot farmers with the seeds that they will drill into the field, harvest as fully formed carrots, transport to the shops, and eventually will end up on your plate as the beautiful bright orange finished article. We don’t just supply carrot seeds though – the range we supply includes parsnips, onions, brussel sprouts, cabbages, swede, leeks and spinach, to name just a few.

We are always innovating to ensure that our seed performance and service keeps pace with the demands of modern farming. We work with Bejo of Holland to offer British farmers an outstanding choice of root crops, and we are always looking out for ways we can treat our seeds to improve crop production. Within the carrot sector we offer traditional favourites such as Nairobi F1, Norwich F1 and Nerac F1, as well as working on exciting new varieties too. We extensively trial and assess our new varieties to ensure they will perform to meet the farmers needs and annually attend the Carrot and Parsnip Demonstration Trials to showcase both new and old varieties.

Martin Strickson, the Elsoms carrot crop manager said: “Our goal is to supply carrot varieties which enable our customers, the farmers, to produce better and more successful crops. We are fully committed to a long term carrot trials programme in the main production areas of the UK, to identify new and improved varieties”.
